Liverpool fell 1-0 to Nottingham Forest in the Reds' first game back in Premier League action after the international break.
While Liverpool looked to be the more dangerous of the two sides, the players could not find a way past Matz Sels in the Forest goal in the opening 45 minutes of action at Anfield. The visitors opted to leave wingers Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi on the bench in the first half, but brought them on after the break to devastating effect.
Clearly keen to let Liverpool have the majority of the ball, Forest's two flying wingers worked wonders on the counter, getting Nuno Espírito Santo's side up the pitch. And on 72 minutes, Elanga and Hudson-Odoi combined for Forest's winner.
Racing down the right wing, Elanga played a ball in behind the Liverpool defence to Hudson-Odoi, who cut inside onto his right foot and unleashed a superb strike that left Alisson flat-footed.

Liverpool linked with Angel Gomes
Liverpool is interested in signing England midfielder Angel Gomes, according to a new report. Gomes, who came through the Manchester United academy, made his international debut during the recent international break, appearing in wins over Ireland and Finland.
Gomes left United as a free agent in 2020 after opting against signing a contract renewal at Old Trafford, and has established himself as a regular in midfield for French side Lille since departing Manchester.
Few expected Gomes to be called up to the England squad, but Lee Carsley's history with the 24-year-old - the pair won the 2023 Under-21 European Championship together - worked in his favour, with the former Everton player a big fan of the youngster's calmness and immaculate ball retention in midfield.
Football Insider reports that Liverpool scouts watched Gomes during England's win over Finland at Wembley last week.
Gomes' contract at Lille is due to expire at the end of this season, and he will be free to negotiate with clubs outside of France from January onwards. Borussia Dortmund is also said to be interested in the former United prospect.

Neville rubs salt in the wound
Gary Neville couldn't turn down an opportunity to aim a dig at Liverpool following the loss today.
Conveniently seemingly forgetting about his side's embarrassing performance against the Reds at Old Trafford prior to the international break, he wrote on Instagram:
"Well… what a football weekend. United win, Salford win & the big one Liverpool lose! Oh dear beautiful weekend."

Shearer: Forest win 'no fluke'
Analysing Forest's win over Liverpool for the BBC, Alan Shearer said:
“Nottingham Forest were outstanding. The way they defended as a team was magnificent and this was no fluke. They stopped Liverpool every time they got into the box. Then they went and hit them on the break, what a finish from Callum Hudson-Odoi. What a start to the season they've had.”

Alisson's reaction to Liverpool's loss
“It was a shame, losing points at home is not good at all but the opponent today only wanted to defend and play for the long ball.
“We gave them that too easily when they scored, it was poor defensively from us We couldn’t create much, we had a lack of quality today, we needed more energy. It is three points we have lost today unnecessarily.
“All the opportunities we had were not clear enough and they defended great, they threw themselves in front of the ball.”

Arne Slot's reaction to Liverpool's loss
"The result frustrates the most and we cannot be happy about how the game went. It was a stop-start game and we harldy created any chances.
"We only have to look at ourselves, we have to be better. Far too many times we lost the ball around the area, it was not good enough. We have to be better with the ball.

And that's that.
Liverpool fall at home 1-0 to Nottingham Forest, who pick up their first win at Anfield in 55 years. In truth, they deserved it.

Double substitution for Liverpool
Two changes for Liverpool here. Kostas Tsimikas and Curtis Jones on, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate off.
Looks like the Reds are playing a back three right now with Tsimikas and Bradley flanking Virgil van Dijk, with Alexander-Arnold and Gravenberch operating as a pivot in front of them.

GOAL!
There's been a goal.
And it's Nottingham Forest who lead. Callum Hudson-Odoi has just scored a screamer at Anfield to send the travelling Nottingham Forest supporters wild.
Anthony Elanga's wonderful pass on the counter finds the winger who cuts inside onto his right foot and unleashes an unbelieveable strike that beats Alisson. They've looked dangerous on the break and their substitutions have changed the game here.

Chance!
Superb stuff from Nottingham Forest who have just produced the best move of the game.
Hudson-Odoi burns past Bradley, finding Wood with a nice ball inside. The striker drops the ball off to Gibbs-White who find Elanga free on the right-wing, but the Swede blazes his effort over the bar. Best move of the game.

Substitutions
Liverpool are making three changes. On come Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Conor Bradley. Off go Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister. Big call from Slot with Alexander-Arnold now shifting into midfield.
Nottingham Forest make a change too bringing on Anthony Elanga for Elliot Anderson.
Oscar Maung-Haley
Sloppy
That's how I'd describe Liverpool in the final third today. They haven't looked too bad in build-up but all of Liverpool's attack just seems to be on a different wavelength when they get into the final third. Some very errant passes.
Oscar Maung-Haley
Substitution
Forest are making an early chance here on 53 minutes, with Callum Hudson-Odoi coming on to replace Dominguez.
Oscar Maung-Haley
Chance!
First chance of the second half for the Reds comes through Salah. Twisting and turning, the Egyptian's near post effort is saved by Sels and turned behind for a corner.
And from the resulting corner, Diogo Jota's header goes wide.

Half-time
0-0 here at Anfield as Michael Oliver blows the whistle for half-time.
Liverpool look the more threatening of the two sides but have been unable to find an opener. Error aside which nearly cost his team a goal, Mats Sels has made some excellent saves for Nottingham Forest.
It'll be interesting to see just what Arne Slot looks to change up for the second half, especially with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister having travelled plenty during the international break.
Oscar Maung-Haley
Yates booked
And given how combative he's been during the opening 45 minutes of action at Anfield so far, Ryan Yates has been booked by Michael Oliver to absolutely no ones surprise.
Oscar Maung-Haley
Mats Sels oh my word...
Mats Sels has nearly just dropped a howler.
A looping header up in the air from Luis Diaz sees the Belgian try to take the ball cleanly under zero pressure, only for the Nottingham Forest goalkeeper to drop it and nearly put it in his own net.
Liverpool have been camped in the Forest half for the last few minutes and look the more threatening of the two sides right now.
Oscar Maung-Haley
But back to the Liverpool game
Pretty sure Trent Alexander-Arnold's just tried to score from a corner? It was tipped over the bar by Sels.
Oscar Maung-Haley
So about Erling Haaland...
Yep, Brentford's lead didn't last long. It's 2-1 to Manchester City. And Erling Haaland's scored again...twice.
Hope you captained him in your FPL team...
