It frustrates me that after decades of developing tools that don’t get used because they just aren’t easy to use, don’t work intuitively and align to working practice we STILL need to reiterate: New guidance outlines digital requirements for nursing and midwifery documentation - they should be intuitive, provide for the re-use of data and easy to search, according to NHS England. The guidance is aimed at helping organisations implement record systems and polices that help nurses to produce good documents to support and evidence decision making and care – while also minimising the time spent on producing the records.#userdesign #fortheuser #intuitive #practical #reusedata https://lnkd.in/evwQQPuT

    NHS England has published new guidance titled, “Towards a unified vision of nursing and midwifery documentation”, which “sets the direction for all nursing documentation across hospitals, community and nursing homes”.The new guidance highlights the digitisation of the NHS in making visible “the volume of documentation that nurses are asked to produce, and the variation that exists, even within the same organisation”. It cites the challenges of moving from paper-based systems to digital ones, including cultural issues associated with reducing unwarranted variation and changing clinical practice.     Last week we launched Towards a Unified Vision of Nursing and Midwifery Documentation –Some think it’s JUST about digital transformation, but it’s much more than that…It’s about the cultural issue of how we record clinical practice, so we can provide greater person-centred care.“The Nurses notes are important in aiding your physician’s work. Make your pens carefully; you may whittle nibs to your individual taste.”This is taken from Duties of the Nurse 1887, something I read at an event I was kindly invited to by Dione Rogers, and has remained on my mind ever since due to it exemplifying the importance of the ‘what’ and ‘how’ we capture things to inform decision making.Digital by itself is not the catch all solution to all the challenges we face in health and social care –It needs ownership and clinical leadership, and this needs to come from our nursing and midwifery professions so we can decide what we need to document and the best technology to enable this.And this is why we created “Towards…” – to provide a collective approach, on what data we collect, and how this can travel across organisational boundaries to provide seamless and coordinated care.This is a call for nurses and midwives to get involved: read the guidance and start those conversations!To learn more about this work join our free webinar on 2nd October, where we’ll be discussing the guidance and the fundamentals of good nursing and midwifery documentation:https://lnkd.in/eSv6sexV

    "Saudi Nursing & Midwifery Scope of Practice" has been published, so what is next?A colleague of mine asked me what is a scope of practice and why do we need it? Well, Nursing Scope of Practice as defined by INC (2016) is the range of roles, functions, responsibilities, and activities that a registered/licensed professional is educated for, competent in, and authorized to perform. In summary, scope of practice is guiding all nursing professional practices. Therefore developing nursing job descriptions and competencies should take into consideration the national nursing scope of practice to guide the development. Having nursing scope of practice also means that nurses are responsible and accountable by law and ethical code of conduct to abide by, so our nursing practice is unified and legislated. After publishing our Nursing & Midwifery Scope of Practice what should we do? I believe that now all nursing leaders and nursing affairs at all healthcare facilities In Saudi should review the national "Nursing & Midwifery Scope of Practice" and work on evaluating their nursing documents to ensure that the institutional nursing legal/practice documents are aligned with the "Nursing & Midwifery Scope of Practice". Second, application of scope of practice standards for registered nurses/midwives and technicians must occur at all levels. To not be very detailed this time, I will talk later about the domains and standards of the scope and put some examples of how each standard could be implemented.     Dear Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC),I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent imposition of restrictive verification rules that infringe upon the human rights of nurses. As a dedicated member of the nursing profession, I believe it is essential to address this issue and advocate for the protection of our rights rather than imposing additional barriers that hinder our practice.It is disheartening to witness the NMC, an organization entrusted with upholding professional standards and advocating for nurses' rights, implement regulations that undermine our autonomy and dignity. The imposition of burdensome verification requirements not only creates undue stress and hardship for nurses but also impedes our ability to provide timely and effective care to those in need.As frontline healthcare workers, we rely on the NMC to be our ally and advocate, fighting alongside us to protect our rights and promote a supportive and enabling environment for nursing practice. Instead, these verification rules feel like an unnecessary obstacle, pitting the regulatory body against the very professionals it is meant to serve.I urge the NMC to reconsider these punitive measures and instead prioritize collaborative approaches that empower nurses and uphold their fundamental rights. By engaging in dialogue with stakeholders, including nurses themselves, the NMC can develop solutions that address concerns around competence and accountability without resorting to heavy-handed tactics that erode trust and goodwill.Furthermore, I implore the NMC to adopt a proactive stance in championing the rights of nurses, both within the profession and in broader society. This includes advocating for fair working conditions, equitable access to resources and opportunities, and recognition of the invaluable contributions nurses make to healthcare delivery.In conclusion, I urge the NMC to reevaluate its approach to verification and refocus its efforts on supporting and advocating for nurses rather than imposing punitive measures that undermine our rights and dignity. Together, we can work towards a future where nurses feel respected, valued, and empowered to fulfill their vital role in promoting health and well-being for all.NMC Healthcare nursingand midwifery
